A universal testing machine (UTM) is an electromechanical testing system that applies a tensile force to raw materials or components to test for both tensile and compressive strength. It is widely used for both small and large load testing in quality control or research projects, etc. Universal testing machines include electromechanical and hydraulic systems to perform static testing, including tensile, compression, bend, peel, tear, shear, friction, puncture, and other mechanical tests.
Operation of the universal testing machine is achieved by hydraulically transferring the load from the test specimen to a separately mounted load indicator. This system is ideal because it replaces the transmission of loads through levers and blades, which are prone to wear and damage from the impact when the specimen breaks. The load is applied by a hydrostatically lubricated plunger. Master cylinder pressure is transmitted to the cylinder block of the swing-out dynamometer system within the control panel. The cylinder of the dynamometer is also designed to be self-lubricating. The deflection of the pendulum represents the absolute load exerted on the test specimen. The return motion of the pendulum is effectively damped to absorb energy in the event of sudden fracture of the specimen..
Components of Universal Testing Machines (UTM)
Primary components make up a universal testing machine as follow:
A universal testing device's load frame can be constructed using a single support or two supports. The upper cross head, lower cross head, and table that the specimen is set on for the compressive strength test make up the load Frame.
The test specimen is clamped at one end using the top cross head. The moveable cross head in the load frame is the lower cross head, and its screws can be loosened and tightened to change the cross head's height. A tapered slit runs through the middle of each cross head. The tensile test specimen is supposed to be held in place by a pair of racking jaws that are located in this slot.
This component consists of an oil pump that feeds steady oil into the load unit's main cylinder. The specimen is loaded more easily thanks to this flow. An electric motor and sump operate the oil pump in a hydraulic power unit.
The pendulum dynamometer in this device travels with the flow of non-pulsating oil in a tiny cylinder. Through a pivot lever, the pendulum is linked to the piston. Depending on the load placed on the sample, the pivot lever will flex. The load pointer is created from this deflection and shown as the weight on the dial. A knob in the load measuring device allows the user to change the load application range. The measurement unit's precision determines the machine's accuracy rate.
The controls could be hydraulic or electronic. Switches are used by electric control devices to move the cross heads and turn the unit on and off. Two valves - the right control valve and the left control valve or release valve - make up a hydraulic control device. The specimen is subjected to load using a proper control valve.
Features of Universal Testing Machines
Multi-Function
Our universal testing machines are equipped with a variety of clamps and accessories, so they are able to perform various types of tests on different materials, such as testing the tensile, compression and bending properties of metals, plastics, rubber and other materials.
High Accuracy
These machines are designed with high-precision load cells and displacement measurement systems to ensure accurate and reliable test results. They provide an excellent solution for applications that require precise measurement of force and deformation.
Easy to Operate
The universal testing machine is equipped with an intuitive and user-friendly interface so operators can easily set up and control tests. Control features include touch screen control, programmable test sequences and real-time data visualization.
Functions of Universal Testing Machines
Tensile Test
Tensile testing is one of the most typical uses of UTM, which involves pulling a material apart until it breaks. This helps determine how strong, stretchable and rigid the material is.
Compression Test
The opposite of tensile testing is compression testing. Universal testing machines can be used to squeeze items until they reach a certain density, move a certain distance, or break.
Peel Test
The average peel force of a material can be determined by performing a test called a "peel test," which is similar to a "tensile test" but involves separating two materials that were previously bonded together.
Bend Test
In a bend test, the ends of a span of material are held in place while a machine applies force in the center of the span until the material breaks or travels a predetermined distance. The flexural strength and flexural modulus of a material are determined through bending tests.
Puncture Test
To determine the level of puncture resistance of a material sample in a puncture test, the sample needs to be pierced until it is punctured.
Types of Universal Testing Machines
Single Column Universal Testing Machine
Single-column universal testing machines, also often called C-frame testing machines because of their shape, have the smallest footprint and capacity. These systems are typically used on benchtops and have load capacities ranging from a few ounces to approximately 1,000 pounds. Virtually every single-column machine is electromechanical and uses small servo motors to provide power and control. If you have a testing application that requires more than 1,000 pounds, you will need to use a two-column machine or you may cause the machine to buckle.
Two-Column Universal Testing Machine
Two-column test benches are also known as H-frames due to their design. The H-frame structure is extremely strong and was the basis for some of the earliest universal testing machines. Capacities of these systems range from 500 pounds to over 100,000 pounds. Two-column UTM can be electromechanical or servo-hydraulic. Generally speaking, hydraulic presses are better suited for extremely repetitive testing of high-strength materials in a production environment. Electromechanical machines are more versatile in terms of speed and stroke length, which makes them more suitable for R&D environments where many different types of testing can be performed.
Application of Universal Testing Machines
Universal testing machines are widely used in the manufacturing industry for quality control and durability assessment of materials - such as metals, plastics, rubber, textiles and composites.
Universal testing machines are used to inspect aircraft components, such as wings, fuselage structures, and engine components. By subjecting these materials to rigorous testing, any potential weaknesses or flaws can be identified before they compromise the integrity and performance of aerospace systems.
The automotive industry relies heavily on universal testing machines to evaluate the strength and performance characteristics of various automotive components, including suspension systems, engine components, braking systems, and body panels. These tests help engineers optimize designs to improve safety and reliability.
Construction materials such as concrete, steel bars, bolts and cables need to be thoroughly tested before a construction project begins. Universal testing machines help determine material properties such as yield strength and ultimate tensile strength to ensure structural integrity throughout the life cycle of a building or infrastructure project.
Medical device manufacturers use universal testers to conduct extensive research and development on different types of biomedical devices, such as implants, stents, pacemakers, etc.
