ASTM A1011/A1011M (Hot‑Rolled Steel Sheet and Strip) + ASTM A568/A568M

1. Scope & Normative Relationship

ASTM A1011/A1011M: Product specification for hot‑rolled carbon, structural, HSLAS, HSLAS‑F, UHSS steel sheet and strip (coils & cut lengths)

ASTM A568/A568M: General‑requirements specification for hot‑rolled / cold‑rolled steel sheet/strip. A1011/A1011M shall comply with all sampling, specimen, retest and procedural clauses of A568/A568M.

Inch‑pound units and SI metric units are independent standards; do not mix‑convert requirements for acceptance.

2. Tensile Property Requirements

2.1 Commercial Steel (CS), Drawing Steel (DS)

Tensile values are typical reference values only, non‑mandatory for acceptance. Conformance is judged by bend test onlyASTM Inter....

CS: Yield 30‑50 ksi (205‑340 MPa); typical elongation ≥25 % (2‑in gauge length)

DS: Yield 30‑45 ksi (205‑310 MPa); typical elongation ≥28 % (2‑in gauge length)
3. Sampling Rules (per ASTM A568/A568M)

Specimen orientation: Default longitudinal specimens (axis parallel to rolling direction). Transverse specimens only if specified in purchase order. Report specimen orientation on test reportdn710007.c....

Sampling location: Sample taken at approximately 1/4‑width position away from coil edges. Avoid coil head / tail regions, welds and heavily oxidized areas.

Lot size: One tensile test per heat / processing lot per maximum 200 short tons (181 t). Material less than 200 t per coil shall constitute one lot, minimum one tensile specimen per lot.

Specimen preparation:

Standard flat sheet tensile specimen: width 12.5 mm, original gauge length \(L_0\)=50 mm (2 in).

Remove flame‑cut heat‑affected zones by machining / milling. Do not test as‑cut edges.

For thickness < 0.040 in (1.0 mm), full‑thickness flat specimens are permitted.

4. Tensile Test Operating (ASTM A370)

Yield strength determination:

For low‑carbon grades with distinct yield plateau: use lower yield point \(R_{eL}\).

For HSLAS / high‑strength grades without yield plateau: apply 0.2 % offset methoddn710007.c....

Stress rate: 7‑30 MPa/s within elastic range; reduce rate after yielding, avoid shock loading.

Elongation measurement:

Gauge length fixed at 2 in (50 mm).

Fracture shall occur within the middle one‑third of gauge length; otherwise specimen is invalid and retest required.

Rounding: Strength values rounded to nearest 1 ksi or 5 MPa; elongation rounded to whole percentage, per ASTM E29 practice.

5. Retest Requirements (ASTM A568/A568M)

If one original tensile specimen fails to meet specification requirements, take two additional retest specimens from the same lot.

Lot is acceptable if both retest specimens satisfy all mechanical requirements. If any retest fails, the whole lot shall be rejected or re‑processed for re‑evaluation.

Fracture caused by surface scratches, jaw‑grip damage is not regarded as material non‑conformance; replace specimen and repeat test.
